AFDI was founded in 1991 and officially registered as a non profit-making association in Berlin (district court Schöneberg) on April 29th in 1992.
The work of AFDI is based on democratic principles. |

| AFDI and its active friends and supporters collect and archive numerous publications in Persian, published both in Iran as well as outside Iran. |
| The material collected ranges from social problems to cultural and political topics of Iranian contemporary history, especially about Iranians abroad. |
| Since 1999 the material is registered in a computer based database, which is continuously expanding. However, it will take more time to complete registration. |
